If you were to ask my husband, my family, or any number of my friends, I’m sure most, if not all, of them could tell you who my main fashion inspiration is.
Shoes that draw envy around the world. Outfits that inspire the masses.
And although I realize they are two separate people, I absolutely adore Sarah Jessica Parker/Carrie Bradshaw. I mean, what woman doesn’t? The Manolos. The Patrica Field ensembles. The vintage Chanel. Swoon.
Some girls dream of Robert Pattinson or George Clooney. I dream of a closet like Carrie’s in the Sex and the City movie. Of course, having a closet like that on a teacher’s salary is as likely as having one on a New York Star writer’s salary. But a girl can dream.
I wouldn’t say that I buy things or wear things because she (and by she I mean either SJP and/or Carrie) would wear them. But I think when you look in my closet or see me in certain outfits, you can definitely tell I’m channeling her just a bit.
I do have my very own pair of Manolos, courtesy of my husband. But I mostly rely on the cheaper versions of the designer goods. I personally think Nine West and Steve Madden have fabulous versions of the designer desires. I remember rushing in to Nine West after I saw Carrie sporting those lovely Dior Gladiator Sandals. (Thank you Nine West for being on top of that trend!)
I also rely on various websites for inspiration. I’d have to say that Daily Candy is, by far, the best out there. If you are not yet subscribing to Daily Candy, you must do so IMMEDIATELY. Badjoan.com is fabulous for discounts on up and coming fashion designers. Haute Look is also great for discounts. But I think my most fantastic find as of late is giltgroupe.com. Check it out. Sign up. Get fantastic goods for cheap. (well, cheaper than retail)
Actually, check all these sites out, sign up, become a fashionista.
Having a fashion inspiration isn’t about imitating or simply recreating; it’s about taking what you love about that fashionista and making it your own. While I love the over-sized flowers Carrie donned in the last movie, I’m not running out to purchase one for every outfit. Overkill of a trend takes that trend from fashion to faux pax quite quickly. Instead, I might sport a small cuff bracelet with a flower on it, or, if I’m feeling a little more daring, a flower-topped headband.
At the end of the day, it’s about creating your own fashion. There will be mis-steps. (Mischa Barton and many of her choices, for instance) But if you’re confident, then you can pull off almost anything. (think: Carrie’s Swiss miss outfit from Season 2) Of course, you also have to be willing to admit when you’ve committed a fashion sin. (i.e. Me in high school when I clocked in at over 210 pounds but still wanted to squeeze myself in to a size 8…no disrespect to the lovely larger ladies…I just wish I would have owned up to my size and worked it a little better! More on that in a later post)
My future blogs will be about my fabulous finds, my very own wardrobe, my opinion on fashion faux pas, and all sorts of other wonderful topics. Let me know if there is anything you’d like to hear my opinion about…because I’m always glad to share it!
Much respect in this blog must be paid to: www.dailycandy.com; www.gilt.com; www.hautelook.com; www.badjoan.com
And remember: If it’s not couture…fake it.
